Ways to use essential oils

Decoders have information on many of the popular essential oils and can be used by looking up a use then seeing what oil is good for that use. Or if you already are interest in a particular oil you can find uses for it.  The Decoder will also tell you about sensitivities and precautions.

  • In the shower and bath,
    • Place 2 to 5 drops (of an oil that's healthy for skin) and a spoonful of sea salt in your bath water for an exotic and rejuvenating mineral bath.
    • Make any shower feel like being in a fragrant spa. Place 2 to 5 drops in the shower or on the shower walls before turning on the water. The steam will carry the essential oils, bathing your entire body in aromas.
note: Some essential oils can stain, be sure to try them on a small area first.

  • It's easy to purify and tone your skin with an essential oil facial.
    • Just fill your sink about a third full with hot water, add a few drops of essential oils and lean over the steam with a towel draped over your head (making a tent to hold in the steam). Breathe deeply and enjoy the aroma as the essential oils rejuvenate your skin, lungs and sinuses.
note: some essential oils are better than others for skin care (like rosewood, lavender, clary   sage). Take the time to learn which oils are best for you and which oils are safest

    • Make your own perfume by blending your favorite essential oils and diluting them with alcohol (perfumers alcohol is best but Vodka is much easier to find and works nearly as well). Use 1 part essential oils to 9 parts alcohol mix thoroughly.
      • note: Be sure to include an essential oil that is a fixative in your blend. Some good fixatives are  sandalwood, frankincense, patchouli, myrrh, and cedarwood.

  • In the kitchen
    • Free yourself from scrubbing with the help of essential oils. Essential oils act as solvents (they dissolve sticky compounds) because they are volatile.  Just use a few drops of any citrus oil (sweet orange, grapefruit, lemon, etc..) and a few cups of hot water to soak hard-to-remove dirt. We have found nothing more effective at cleaning stained coffee pots and baked on foods.
    • After dinner clean-up can be easy. Place a few drops of a citrus oil into your dishwater. It's guaranteed to help you get the stuck-on food off of your dishes, and as a bonus it smells incredible.
    • Food companies have been flavoring foods with essential oils for centuries. You can too!  Many essential oils are listed in the FCC (Food Chemical Codex, a listing of internationally accepted ingredients for foods and cosmetics) as edible. The concentrated nature of essential oils lets you flavor large amounts of food with only a few drops of essential oils.
note: Essential oils are very concentrated, use a very small amount in your cooking. Also, essential oils are flammable so be very careful using them near sources of heat.
