This trace mineral aids in bone health. Studies on tendencies
within population groups show that people who have high-boron diets have a
very low incidence of arthritis, and there's evidence that people with
Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid Arthritis can benefit. The best sources of boron are fresh fruits and
vegetables and, depending on where you live, drinking water.
Boron supplements are especially good for older people.
Boron is known to help support proper bone growth and is also useful for
people who want to build muscle.
Doctor Rex E. Newnham, Ph.D., D.O., has shown a
relationship between a dietary lack of boron and joint stress. (See his
article in the Journal of Applied Nutrition, volume 46, issue
3, 1994.) The article observes:
- People in Jamaica and other surrounding islands where the soil and
diet is low in Boron have a higher than average chances of suffering
from arthritis.
- Boron amounts in the soil is directly proportional to the amount
of organic matter. Highly fertilized crops provide much less
quantities of boron.
- South Africans with a high boron diet had a 3% incidence of
arthritis. When they changed their diet after moving to the city they
had a 20% incidence of arthritis. (Similar findings in a study of
arthritis in Israel with high boron levels in the soil and food)
- Hot mineral spas where boron content in the water is very high
have the reputation of healing arthritis.
Experimental evidence shows that estrogen and vitamin D functions are
profoundly influenced by tiny amounts of boron. Without boron estrogen
and vitamin D do not work properly. Studies have shown that if there is enough boron in the diet
of post-menopausal women, their reduced estrogen activity can be some
extent be taken over by boron. For women on hormone replacement therapy,
boron also seems to enhance its benefits. There is also strong evidence
that boron is responsible for converting vitamin D to its 'active' form,
and so, is instrumental in this aspect of bone maintenance.
Current research points to evidence that boron somehow prevents calcium
from being excreted, helps in maintaining the correct balance of other
minerals, and helps the body to avoid osteoporosis in the first place.
That boron may have a role in the prevention or modification of
arthritis is supported by research done with arthritis-susceptible rats
by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. From this research, USDA
scientists hypothesize that boron may regulate the immune system and
protect against inflammatory disease.
