Frankincense grows wild throughout North East Africa. Frankincense
essential oil is produced in Somalia, China, South Arabia and India.
Color = pale yellow to green
Aroma = woody, spicy, haunting smell,
a little bit camphoric
Plant Description
It is a small tree or shrub with abundant pinnate leaves and white to light
pink flowers. The plant has a distinctive woody, spicy aroma with a hint of
lemon. The plant yields a natural oleo gum, a milky white liquid is given off
which solidifies into tear-shaped amber to orange-brown lumps.
Aromatherapy Uses
The therapeutic properties of Frankincense essential oil
include: antiseptic, astringent, carminative, digestive, diuretic, sedative,
tonic and expectorant. Has a calming effect, slowing the breathing and producing
feelings of calm, this tends to bring about an elevating, soothing effect on the
mind, Its comforting action is helpful for anxious and obsessions linked to the
past. It is one of the best pulmonary antiseptics available and is good for
chronic bronchitis and asthma. It aids women by being a tonic to the uterus and
as an aid in dealing with abnormally heavy periods. The oil is a tonic to the
whole reproductive system.
Frankincense essential oil is one of
the few essential oils safe to use on pregnant women and with childbirth.
