Complete Illustrated Guide to Massage
Publisher: Element Books
Author: Stewart Mitchell
The Complete Illustrated Guide to Massage is best suited for two purposes:
first, for those that are considering massage as a profession, and secondly, for
those that wish to use massage therapy to its fullest for personal use. The
Complete Illustrated Guide to Massage will benefit this second group by giving
an understanding of all aspects of the treatments in an anatomical and
psychological context, along with its many applications and benefits. With this
background one can better incorporate massage therapy as a restorative and
preventative medicine throughout his or her life.
The Complete Illustrated Guide to Massage is "text book" like in content, yet
because if its illustrative format and organized layout, it is appropriate even
for beginners. It is a book for beginners or intermediates that wish to gain a
full grasp of the benefits of massage therapy.
The first third of the book covers the various types of massage, explaining
the benefits, preventative applications, the physiological and psychological
effects, case studies, diagnosis of some common complaints, and applications for
illness, injury, and uses for children and the elderly. You'll move on to what
to expect from the therapy, from the consultation through the treatment, from
the ethical guidelines, to the appearance of the treatment room, how to locate a
practitioner and how your records and history are prepared. Once you are
thoroughly schooled in the preliminaries, the illustrated guide takes you
through the anatomy of movement and the skeletal and muscle structure, further
illustrating the various effects of massage. This more complex medical
discussion is distilled down to a simple presentation with charts and
illustrations that aid in the digestion of the anatomical aspects.
Next comes the Massage in Practice section, the application of what was
learned earlier: use of the techniques and strokes on specific sections of the
body. Also covered is the massage environment, the equipment, location, use of
towels, oils, and powders. These are approached from both the massager and
recipient's perspectives.
Special approaches such as shiatsu and inversion therapy are briefly
described along with special applications for pregnancy, babies, and injuries.
One section covers many applications of self-massage and a comprehensive
reference section closes the book. Stewart Mitchell covers a vast territory that
can be appreciated by those with varying levels of experience.
Baby Massage
Publisher: Dorling Kindersley Inc.
Author: Alan Heath
Author: N. Bainbridge
Jill from Winston-Salem, NC, USA
This has been one of the best purchases I have made since the birth of my
son nine months ago. It has taught me how to massage him in a way that has
helped me gain his trust. Not only does it relax him before bed, but it
gives us some precious bonding time that can't be matched! I sing his
favorite song while I do it, and someday, when he can talk, I'm sure he will
sing along. I have suggested this book to all of my 'Mom' friends, and I
urge all Mom's (and Dad's) to buy this one!!

The Book of Massage: The Complete Step-By-Step Guide
to Eastern and Western Technique
Lucy Lidell, et al
Publisher: Simon & Schuster (Paper)
With more than 650,000 copies sold, The Book of Massage is
the classic guide to the relaxing and healing skills of the hands. Featuring
both Eastern and Western methods, it presents step-by-step, beautifully
illustrated instructions on everything from traditional massage to shiatsu and
reflexology.
The Book of Massage is clearly and attractively illustrated, with numerous
photographs. ( there is mild nudity in the book.) The instructions are
well-written, easy-to-understand, and presented in a friendly manner.
Each of the three main sections of the book -- traditional massage,
acupressure, and reflexology -- demonstrate the same richness and clarity of
instruction.
I'm personally more inclined towards traditional massage rather than the
Eastern/holistic techniques. But to my surprise, I found the chapters on
reflexology and acupressure to be full of useful information, and I have
incorporated several of these routines into my massages.
Regardless of which school of massage therapy you favor, you'll find the
techniques presented in the book to be a valuable addition to your repertoire.
This is a superior book on massage, and I regularly recommend it to friends.
Give it a try!
Soft Tissue Massage for Pain Relief
Publisher: Hampton Roads Publishing
Author: Bernard Schatz
In groundbreaking book, Bernard Schatz, P.T., a licensed physical therapist
with more than forty years of clinical experience, teaches you how to relieve
body pain in hours through a unique technique of soft tissue manipulation. He
shows you how to self-treat 37 different types of body pain using simple but
precise techniques. And he presents 50 actual case studies of men and women with
pain who freed themselves of muscle discomfort using the soft tissue
manipulation approach.
The pain-relieving techniques found in "Soft Tissue Massage" are
user-friendly, easily applied, and clearly explained--ideal for many pain
sufferers who have found no relief from conventional treatments.
According to Schatz, all types of pain share a common cause--injured tissues.
When your muscles suffer an injury or trauma that goes unrelieved, they contract
and get irritated, then sore, then rigid, then full of thick, ropy, scar like
fibers, and the result is chronic pain.

This book is a gem of simplicity and usefulness. It
integrates anatomy, myofascial techniques, holistic thinking and traditional

Deep Tissue Massage Edition: Illustrated
Publisher: North Atlantic Books
Author: Art Riggs
Format: Paperback
I found this manual to be extraordinarily helpful. The concise,
well-articulated instruction on proper body mechanics, as well as the detailed
anatomical drawings, and clear, illustrative photographs, make this handbook a
tool I refer to constantly. Every massage practitioner will want to own this
invaluable, definitive publication.
| Reviewer: Rab Terry from San Francisco, CA
United States |
As an aging athlete trying to stave off encroaching decrepitude I have
found this manual to be quite useful for the information it provides on
anatomy and treatment of problems that my increasingly recalcitrant
anatomical features are causing. The sections on stretching and proper body
use are supplemented by excellent anatomical drawings that allow me to
understand why I am feeling pain, and some techniques for alleviating it.
The book is primarily directed towards massage professionals, and there is
information that is not relevant for me, but even that information could be
useful for a massage recipient to become a better partner in their
treatment.

Craniosacral Therapy Edition: Illustrated
Publisher: North Atlantic Books
Author: John E. Upledger
Format: Paperback
Published Date: 2001
Craniosacral therapy improves the central nervous system,
strengthens resistance to disease, enhances overall health, and treats a wide
range of ailments, including learning disabilities, autism, post-traumatic
stress, and cancer. Using a lighter touch than other techniques, this method
mobilizes the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid and the bioelectrical connectivity
of fascial tissue to affect sites of physical and emotional trauma. In this
book, the founder of craniosacral therapy tells the story of its development in
the 1970s and outlines its methods, practices, differences from similar
therapies, and superiority to invasive treatments such as surgery. Dr. Upledger
uses stories from his patients' and his own experiences to describe the methods
and benefits of this fast-growing therapy.

stretches are described that will help prepare the muscles for workout and
reduce post exercise discomfort. Included are sports-specific massage routines
for runners, cyclists, and team-sports players. Specific hands-on routines
